Great tours, great stories

The sea has always brought good fortune to Stavanger. This city walk takes you from the fish oil era to the modern period of the black gold and it's many exciting stories.

The gifts of the sea have always saved Stavanger from financial crises and harship. Herring, sailing boats and sardines have brought wealth to the city. Today, it is oil and gas Stavanger earns most from.

This lovely stroll through the city will give you the perfect introduction into 2 of the country’s most important oil periods. The storytelling starts with large schools of herring arriving the Norwegian shores. You will visit a preserved canning factory, the Norwegian Canning museum, and experience the old production line first-hand; from the arrival of the fish to the smell of smoked sardines in the wood-fired ovens to the ready-packed, hermetically sealed sardine cans leaving the factory for exportation. ”The sea’s silver” brought an economic boost to Stavanger and a population boom.

This time around, since petroleum has been found on Norwegian soil, things have been no different. This treasure of the sea has become the backbone of the modern Norwegian welfare state. During your exploration, you will come to understand the significant added value the oil industry has brought to the region, as well as the nation.

My wife and I would like to pay the utmost compliment to the walking tour guide we had the pleasure of having in Stavanger recently. (..) and she is quite frankly the best guide we have ever experienced on any tour anywhere in the world! She had excellent English and was perfectly understandable at all times. She was pleasant, informative and enthusiastic – giving just enough information to keep it interesting throughout. In short she is the perfect guide, and you are very lucky to have her services.
